Message from the Captain 2025
Welcome one and all to another golfing season , the 36th season for Abbey Panels Golf Society!
Starting with a big thank you to last years Captain, John Tomlinson, for the great job he did. especially with the amount raised for his chosen Charity ,Prostate Cancer UK. of £1526 a record amount for our fund raising over the years. As Captain for the new season, and after recently undertaking Radiotherapy myself for this condition, I am sure you will understand when I tell you that my chosen Charity will again be for Prostate Cancer UK. with my Charity day being held at Oakridge on Friday June 6th. It will be the usual format so please arrange your teams of 3 or 4 payers as soon as possible and ensure a good turnout on the day when, hopefully, we can raise the same amount, or better, for research into this worthwhile cause which, as I know, can affect any of us.
Many thanks to Dave and Paul for successfully steering us through another season and to all the committee for their hard work on each of our days. We have had to make some changes to our fixtures for 2025…Our season starts on March 21st when for the first time since 1999 we will not be visiting Kilworth Springs for our first match, due to a large price increase Stonebridge taking this honour and with Leamington & Co. deciding that they would no longer accept societies on Fridays this venue has been replaced with Ullesthorpe G.C. Following our first match Dave has arranged a visit to Scraptoft Golf Club nr Leicester on April 11th. This is a brand new course for the society and also possibly a last chance to play it as the course has been earmarked for housing once planning permission has been obtained…My Captains Day will be at Beedles Lake on July18th a full day with 9 holes in the morning ,lunch,18 holes followed by an evening meal and presentation. As in the past we will continue with bunker and pond fines to boost the Charity total with a reward to the player contributing the most. After a proposal by our handicap secretary, Andy Bestwick, there will also be a small change to the handicapping system where handicaps will be based on solely on society results.
As you know this is my first stint as Society Captain and it gives me great pleasure to represent A.P.G.S. and along with my vice Captain Paul Taft, I look forward to playing with you all throughout the coming season
